These records include stand-alone wills and more detailed estate files that include will probates and letters of administration...a will may be the final statement of your ancestor's life, and may give some sort of an idea of the personality of your ancestors....as well as giving us an indication of what was going on in the family...who was favoured/disfavoured, who were the 'black sheep', locations of far-away sons or daughters, married names of daughters, and names of grandchildren....also important information on the family property and sometimes the distribution of family 'heirlooms'. Letters of administration usually indicate that a person died intestate, without a will. This was a very common situation in the pioneer years, when our many of our ancestors made their wills on their deathbeds! Early, accidental or unexpected deaths usually meant that the surrogate court issued letters of administration, containing applications from the widow and/or children/relatives for disbursement of the property/belongings of the deceased. These documents often contain interesting and informative information for your family genealogy.
